What if modesty was never your choice?
"Don't be arrogant." "Don't make yourself out to be bigger than others." "Stay humble."
Later, other descriptions are added: too ambitious, too dominant, too self-confident.
You never made these rules yourself. You adopted them because they worked in your environment, and at some point, you stopped questioning them. Today, reticence feels like your character, even though it was originally an adaptation.
The consequences become apparent even when you're already successful. You hold back in meetings, even though you know the answer. You attribute your successes to luck or your team. You wait until you feel ready before making yourself visible – and in the meantime, you compare yourself to people who simply put themselves forward.
This is not a personal shortcoming. It's a pattern. And patterns can be identified.
Recognition is the beginning of change.
